MagSafe related to a range of proprietary power connectors developed by Apple, designed to provide safe and efficient power delivery to Apple products. Initially introduced for MacBooks, MagSafe has evolved over the years, with a third generation and being available on the iPhone.
MagSafe 1
The first version of MagSafe was introduced in January 2006 with the MacBook Pro. This magnetic power connector was designed to safely detach when the cable was tugged or pulled, preventing your Mac from being pulled off surfaces and reducing the risk of damage. The connector was L-shaped, with the cable extending out from the side of the MacBook.
MagSafe 2
MagSafe 2 was introduced in June 2012 with the MacBook Air and later with the MacBook Pro with Retina Display. This version featured a thinner and wider connector, making it compatible with the slimmer designs of the newer MacBooks. While the core functionality remained the same, the redesign allowed for a more secure fit and better alignment with the device’s charging port.
In 2015, Apple switched from MagSafe to USB-C charging in an effort to standardise ports and continue making the Mac thinner.
MagSafe On iPhone
In October 2020, Apple reintroduced MagSafe with the iPhone 12. This time, MagSafe was a magnetic accessory system built into the back of the iPhone. It allowed for easy attachment of chargers such as the MagSafe charger and MagSafe Duo, as well as cases, wallets, and other accessories, ensuring perfect alignment and improving ease-of-use when wireless charging. MagSafe for iPhone also enabled faster wireless charging compared to standard Qi wireless chargers.
MagSafe Returns With MagSafe 3

MagSafe 3 was introduced in 2021 with the redesigned MacBook Pro models. This new iteration combined the best aspects of the previous MagSafe connectors with modern enhancements. The connector reverted to a T-shape similar to MagSafe 2 but was redesigned to fit the new MacBook Pro’s aesthetics and functionality.
A MagSafe 3 connector has five spring contacts and the jacket of the cable is made of woven nylon. The other end of the cable is a USB-C connector, allowing you to connect it to a USB-C power adapter for charging.
Improvements To MagSafe
MagSafe 3 brought several improvements over its predecessors. It offers faster charging capabilities, delivering higher wattage for quick and efficient power delivery. The new design ensures a more secure connection, with stronger magnets to keep the cable in place even when the device is moved.
Why Apple Went Back to MagSafe
Apple’s decision to return to MagSafe for their latest MacBook Pro models was driven by user feedback and a new Mac redesign. MagSafe 3 addresses the limitations of USB-C charging, such as accidental disconnections, port wear and tear, and frees up a USB-C port that would previously been used for charging.
