Universal Control Explained

What Is Universal Control?

Universal Control is an Apple feature introduced with macOS Monterey and iPadOS 15. It allows users to seamlessly work across multiple Apple devices, like Macs and iPads, using a single keyboard, mouse, or trackpad. With Universal Control, you can control up to three devices at once, moving between screens as if they were a single, continuous workspace.

Key Features Of Universal Control

No Setup Required

Universal Control automatically detects nearby Macs and iPads, allowing you to move the mouse cursor between devices without any additional configuration.

Drag & Drop Across Devices

You can drag and drop files, text, and images between your Mac and iPad. This makes it easier to transfer documents, share images, or continue working on a project without hassle.

Keyboard Mouse Sharing

Universal Control lets you type on one device and instantly switch to another. Whether you’re typing on your Mac or iPad, the keyboard and mouse will work across both screens seamlessly.

Multiple Device Support

You can control up to three devices at the same time with Universal Control. This feature is especially useful for users who often multitask across a Mac, iPad, or another Mac.

Compatibility

Universal Control requires macOS Monterey or later and iPadOS 15 or later. Most modern Macs and iPads support this feature, as long as the devices are signed into the same iCloud account and have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff enabled.

How It Differs From Sidecar

Sidecar turns your iPad into a secondary display for your Mac, while Universal Control keeps each device independent. With Universal Control, you can manage different tasks across devices without mirroring or extending screens. Sidecar is ideal for using your iPad as a second display, while Universal Control is better suited for multitasking between separate devices.

How To Use Universal Control

  1. Ensure your devices are running macOS Monterey or iPadOS 15 or later.
  2. Make sure all devices are signed into the same iCloud account and have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff enabled.
  3. Place your iPad near your Mac and move your cursor to the edge of one screen. The cursor will automatically transition to the other device.

Universal Control is a game-changing feature that enhances productivity by enabling seamless multitasking between Macs and iPads, making it easier to manage tasks across multiple devices.
