Cleaning Your iPhone Correctly

Learn how to successfully and correctly clean dirt or sand, ink, make-up, soap, detergent, acids or acidic foods, or lotions from your iPhone.

How To Clean Your Device

  • A soft, lint-free microfibre cloth
  • 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes
  • Cotton buds

First, unplug all cables and turn off your iPhone. Spray the 70% isopropyl alcohol onto the lint-free cloth such as a lens cloth and gently wipe and clean your iPhone. Avoid getting moisture in openings such as the loud speaker, earpiece speaker, charging port or Ring/Silent switch.

Your iPhone has a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating. This coating is a type of oil repellent and cleaning products or abrasive materials will diminish the coating and may scratch your iPhone.

Is It Okay To Use Isopropyl Alcohol?

Using a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe, you may gently wipe the exterior surfaces of your iPhone. Don’t use products containing bleach or hydrogen peroxide as this can cause damage to both the exterior and internals of your device. Avoid getting moisture in any openings, and don’t submerge your iPhone in any cleaning agents.

What Not To Do

  • Don’t use cleaning products such as glass cleaner or general surface cleaner.
  • Don’t use compressed air as this can damage components of your device.
  • Don’t use tooth picks or tweezers to remove lint or debris from the charging port as you may damage the port.
  • Don’t submerge your iPhone into any cleaning solution as this can cause liquid damage to your device.

Textured Matte Finishes on iPhone

Your iPhone may feature a glass with a textured matt finish either on the back glass or around the camera area. With normal use, the textured glass on your iPhone may show signs of material transfer from objects that come in contact with your iPhone, such as denim or items in your pocket. Material transfer may resemble a scratch, but can be removed in most cases.

iPhone Service Cleaning In-Store

If you bring your iPhone in-store our team can set up a General Service Cleaning for your iPhone. In many cases your iPhone just needs a thorough clean instead of needing a repair, especially when your iPhone isn’t charging.

During this clean our Repair Specialists use special, safe chemicals for your iPhone. We’ll also complete a UV clean on the device and examine the internals of your iPhone. If your iPhone isn’t working properly or the charging port isn’t charging your device it’s best to bring it in-store for a diagnosis as attempting to clean the charging port or speakers can damage components. Liquid Damage Repair Cleaning

If you dropped your iPhone in water or spilt coffee on your device it may still function but parts may start to fail. Bringing your device in-store for a Repair Diagnosis can help stop corrosion and more extended damage to your iPhone and its internals.

If your iPhone isn’t working properly due to liquid or water damage it’s best to bring it in-store as attempting to clean the device then powering it on or placing it on charge can damage it. More about Liquid Damage Repair.
