Optimise Your MacBook Battery

Optimise the life of your MacBook, fix battery issues, and get a battery service. Learn how to keep your MacBook battery in good condition.

Your MacBook battery life depends on your computer’s configuration and how you’re using your device. Here are some settings and steps to follow to get the best performance out of your Mac’s battery.

Check Battery Preferences

By going into System Preferences then choosing the Battery pane allows you to improve the battery life on your MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. To view Battery settings, click the Apple menu in the top left corner, select System Preferences, click Battery or Energy Saver, then select Battery in the sidebar.

Some features such as Automatic graphics switching, and Power Nap aren’t available on all Macs or versions of macOS.

For The Best Battery Life

For the best maximum battery life, try the following settings:

1. First, turn on “Slightly dim the display while on battery power”. This setting lets your MacBook adjust the display brightness to 75% when you unplug from power.
2. Turn off “Enable Power Nap while on battery power”. This setting prevents your MacBook from checking for emails or other iCloud updates during sleep, which improves standby time and battery life.
3. If available, turn on “Automatic graphics switching”. This allows your MacBook Pro with multiple graphics processors to switch between them automatically, maximising battery life.
4. Lastly, turn on “Low power mode”. Low power mode reduces your Mac’s energy usage to increase battery life.

Adjust Display Brightness

By allowing Mac to adjust your display brightness automatically to conserve power. If automatic brightness is off, you should turn it back on to preserve battery life. You can do this by choosing the Apple menu > System Preferences, click Displays and then turn on “Automatically adjust brightness.

Check Battery Health

If your MacBook battery isn’t holding its charge or says Service Battery. You can check the health of your battery in Battery preferences or the Battery Status menu:

1. In macOS Big Sur or later, click the Apple menu > System Preferences, click Battery, select Battery in the sidebar, then click Battery Health.
2. In macOS Catalina or earlier, hold the Option key and click the battery icon in the menu bar to reveal the Battery Status menu.

You’ll see one of the following status indicators:

1. Normal: This means your Mac battery is functioning normally and shouldn’t need a service.
2. Service Recommended: If your Mac battery says Service Recommended, its ability to hold charge is less than when it was new, or the battery may not be functioning normally. You can safely continue to use your Mac, but you should take it to our team to get your battery evaluated.

MacBook Battery Service

If your battery holds less of a charge than when it was new or needs to be serviced, the battery status will display Replace Soon, Replace Now or Service Battery in earlier versions of macOS. If the battery’s lowered charging capacity is affecting your experience, get your battery serviced and replaced in-store with Ryujin Electronics.

Some third-party apps can report on battery health conditions, but the data reported by these apps may be inaccurate and isn’t a conclusive indication of your Mac’s actual battery health. It’s best to rely on the information reported in the Battery Health menu, or by one of our Repair Specialists.

Check The Battery Status Menu

The Battery Status menu shows you how much charge your battery has and whether it’s currently being charged. This menu is on the right-hand side of the menu bar.

This menu also tells you if your display or any apps are using significant energy. You can also consider closing any apps that are listed to save battery power.

If you use optimised battery charging in macOS Big Sur or later, you’ll see additional information when your Mac is connected to power, such as whether charging has been paused or when your battery will be fully charged. If charging has been paused and you need your Mac to be fully charged sooner, click Charge to Full Now.
