Understand The ‘Important Message’ Or ‘Unknown Part’ Notification On Your iPhone
If you just had a repair done to your iPhone or just purchased a second-hand iPhone, you may encounter a message from Apple, indicating that there may be an “issue” with your battery, display, or camera. Or, you may have just noticed an ‘Unknown Part’ label under the Parts and Service History section in your devices Settings.
What Do Those Messages Mean?
These notifications or alerts pop up usually when a repair has been done on your iPhone. These messages let you know any replacement components such as a replacement battery, display, or rear camera.
In some cases, these alerts will pop up after damage to your device, such as drops or liquid damage. You may also see a Service battery message or Face ID error message.
When you choose to service your iPhone with AppleCare+ or out-of-warranty service with Apple you will receive a notification as well.
What If I Have A Face ID Error Message?
If you encounter a Face ID error message on your iPhone, it could be indicative of issues with the True Depth camera system responsible for Face ID functionality. Face ID errors usually occur after drops or liquid damage.
To address this concern, it is recommended to visit us in-store for diagnostic testing and a professional assessment. Our Repair Specialists have the expertise to diagnose and address Face ID issues, whether they stem from hardware or software issues.
We’ll conduct a thorough inspection of the Front Facing camera system and, if needed, can repair the damage.
Where Are These Notifications?
These notifications may appear on your lock screen for up to four days before moving to Settings for up to another 15 days. They will continue to appear in the Parts and Service History section in Settings > About to keep track of any replacement parts.
Depending on your iOS version, you’ll see different messages:
For iOS 15 and later, you will see these messages in Settings > General > About in the Parts and Service History section to see which components have been replaced.
- An ‘Unknown Part’ means the installed component may have been installed by a independent service provider and hasn’t been installed by an AASP or Apple.
- A ‘Genuine Apple Part’ indicates the replacement was installed by Apple.
If the replacement display, battery, or camera is still an original part the ‘Unknown Part’ message and notification can still appear as only Apple has access to change this setting. Any replacement or original part serviced with Ryujin Electronics is still calibrated to work correctly and this may also be the case with other providers.
For iOS versions earlier than iOS 15, you may need to visit Settings > Battery > Battery Health to see any battery replacement history.

Understanding and Resolving iPhone Notifications
Encountering the ‘Unknown Part’ or ‘Important Message’ notification or message on your iPhone should not cause any concern. These notifications simply inform you that a component such as the battery, display, or camera may have been replaced before. The message does not mean the performance and quality of the parts replaced are not of good quality.
