Calibrate Your iPhone Or Mac Battery
If you have just had your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or MacBook battery serviced or replaced with us then we may recommend to calibrate your battery after service.
Although manufacturers of lithium-ion batteries disagree and say that Li-ion is ready at birth and doesn’t need any calibration many users may report some capacity gains by cycling a newly installed or long stored battery.
Calibrating or priming the battery can help your system get an accurate reading on the battery’s state of charge. Without calibration, the battery percentage reading can be incorrect, and your device may behave oddly, such as shutting down suddenly even though the battery ‘reads’ 50% charge, or working for hours when the battery ‘reads’ nearly dead.
How To Calibrate Your Device
If one of our Repair Specialists asks you to calibrate the battery it can be done in three easy steps. This relates to all iPhone and iPad models as well as to Apple Watch and Mac.
- Charge your device to 100% and keep charging it for at least 2 more hours.
- Unplug your device, then continue to use the device until it shuts off due to low battery.
- Once the device is flat, begin to charge it uninterrupted to 100%.
After you have completed these three steps, your battery is now calibrated. You can now continue to use and charge your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch as you like.
How Is My Mac Battery Calibrated?
Your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air will be calibrated by our team of Repair Specialists in-store. Once your Mac battery has been replaced, we’ll run our full Diagnostics test to make sure your battery is working as expected. If needed, we’ll reset the SMC (System Management Controller), NVRAM or PRAM to make sure it’s working.
How Long Should My Device Last?
Depending on how you use your iPhone, an original or replacement battery will typically be “like new” for about 2 years. After this time, or once your battery health shows less than 80% we recommend having it serviced and replaced.
iPad batteries are considered to be “like new” for about 3 years but if you use it everyday it may need to be serviced now or in the near future. As iPad batteries don’t currently show any Battery health settings you can bring it to us and one of our Repair Specialists will be able to test your battery and let you know its health and if it needs to be replaced.
Your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air battery will usually continue to work for about 3 – 5 years. Depending on how you use your Mac, this service life may be longer or shorter than this time. Your MacBook will also let you know when it needs to be serviced.
